Miles & More: how and where to earn miles

Flying is only one way: with a credit card, PAYBACK and even a newspaper subscription you can fill your account in everyday life – and keep your miles from expiring.

Miles & More is the Lufthansa Group's frequent flyer programme. There are two currencies: **miles** are for awards – flights, upgrades, hotels or merchandise. **Points** count towards frequent flyer status and you only earn them flying with the partner airlines. This guide is about miles – which you can collect without flying much.

The details below apply to Miles & More in Germany; credit cards and partners differ by country.

1. When you fly

  • Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance: with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and many partner airlines you earn miles and points. On Lufthansa Group airlines, the number of miles depends on the fare and your status.
  • Always add your number: enter your Miles & More number with every booking. Forgot? You can claim missing miles later in your account.
  • Keep your boarding pass and ticket until the miles are credited.

2. With the Miles & More credit card

The biggest lever in everyday life. The cards are issued by Deutsche Bank and earn **1 mile per €2** on every purchase – wherever Mastercard is accepted, more with selected partners.

MyFlex Credit Card€0 a monthearn miles with no card fee, pay back in instalments
Blue Credit Card€5.50 a monthprotects your miles from expiring
Gold Credit Card€11.50 a monthmileage protection plus a travel insurance package

Until 30 November 2026, the issuer offers 20,000 miles, 4 lounge vouchers and 40 points as a welcome package with the Gold Card. Card fees can also be paid with miles.

3. With PAYBACK

  • Convert points to miles: from 200 PAYBACK points you can convert at **1:1** into Miles & More miles – right in your PAYBACK account.
  • Miles subscription: sign up and PAYBACK automatically converts all available points into miles twice a year, in March and September. Set it up once and forget about it.
  • Wait for promotions: now and then there are bonus miles on transfers. If you're not in a hurry, keep collecting until then.
  • Earn twice: with the free Miles & More PAYBACK card you collect PAYBACK points at supermarkets, petrol stations or chemists – and turn them into miles later.

4. Subscriptions and partners

  • Newspaper subscriptions: subscribing to major daily newspapers – print, e-paper or digital – earns miles, and referrals often earn more.
  • Books: booksellers in the programme also credit miles.
  • Hotels, car rental, shopping, finance: hundreds of partners – current offers are under “Earn” at Miles & More. Look out for multiple-miles promotions.

What about Amex Membership Rewards?

There's no direct transfer from Membership Rewards to Miles & More. The detour via PAYBACK costs 3 Membership Rewards points per mile – only worth it in exceptional cases. Which partners give you more is in our Membership Rewards guide.

Keep your miles from expiring

  • Valid for 36 months: miles are valid for 36 months from the activity (flight, hotel stay, rental) and then expire at the end of the quarter.
  • Protection through status: with Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle, miles don't expire.
  • Protection through the credit card: with the Blue or Gold Credit Card your miles are protected. If you cancel the card, expiry applies again.
  • Redeem in time: your Miles & More account shows which miles will expire soon.

Our tips

  • Set a goal: saving for a business class award flight is different from collecting for the occasional upgrade.
  • Bundle your everyday spending: credit card, PAYBACK with the miles subscription and the odd partner offer – it adds up faster than you'd think.
  • Compare awards: miles are usually worth more on award flights than on merchandise.
