1 point per euro, 1.5 with Turbo: how to collect Membership Rewards, when Turbo pays off – and why transferring to airlines usually gets you the most.

Membership Rewards is American Express's rewards programme. What makes it special: the points are flexible. You can redeem them with American Express – or convert them into miles and hotel points with more than a dozen partners. That's where the real value lies.

The details below apply to American Express cards issued in Germany; partners and rates differ in other countries.

How you earn

  • 1 point per euro: the American Express Card, Gold Card and Platinum Card earn one Membership Rewards point per euro spent. On the Blue Card the programme is available for an annual fee.
  • Supplementary cards count: spending on supplementary cards goes into the main cardholder's account.
  • Put everyday spending on the card: groceries, fuel, online shopping, subscriptions – the more you put on it, the faster your balance grows. The acceptance search in the Amex app shows where Amex is taken.
  • Welcome and referral bonuses: new cards and supplementary cards often come with bonus points.

Membership Rewards Turbo

  • 50% more points: with Turbo you get one extra point per €2 – 3 points instead of 2.
  • Price: €15 a year, renews automatically and can be cancelled one month before the end of the 12-month term.
  • Cap: at most 20,000 extra points a year, i.e. on up to €40,000 of spending. After that it's one point per euro again.
  • Covers supplementary cards; only the main cardholder can activate it in the online account.

Rule of thumb: if a point is worth at least one cent to you, Turbo pays off from around €3,000 card spend a year. Transfer points to airlines and the value is usually much higher.

How to get the most out of your points

  • Award flights give the best value, especially in business or first. A business class ticket that costs several thousand euros in cash is often available via Flying Blue, Avios or KrisFlyer for a manageable number of points plus taxes and fees.
  • Search first, then transfer: check availability with the partner before transferring – transfers can't be reversed.
  • Wait for transfer bonuses: American Express sometimes offers bonus points on transfers to selected partners.
  • Avios for short hops, Flying Blue for Europe and long-haul from Paris or Amsterdam, KrisFlyer and Asia Miles for Asia.
  • Hotel points with care: Hilton at 1:1 sounds good, but each Hilton point is worth much less than a mile.
  • The least value usually comes from paying off purchases with points or redeeming for merchandise.
  • Miles & More isn't a direct partner – only via PAYBACK at 3 : 1; more in our Miles & More guide.

What about hotels?

For hotels, the card itself is often the better route: with the Platinum Card you book through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts and get breakfast, a credit and late check-out – leaving your points free for flights.
