What status gets you

  • Room upgrade subject to availability – the higher your status, the better your chances.
  • Breakfast or lounge access at higher tiers of many programmes.
  • Late check-out and earlier check-in when the hotel can make it possible.
  • More points per stay and better service if something goes wrong.

Status without lots of nights

  • Through credit cards: some cards give you status with hotel chains – the American Express Platinum, for example, according to American Express, Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite (each after enrolment).
  • Status match: some programmes match a comparable status from another programme – often as a limited-time offer.
  • Promotions: hotel programmes regularly offer double nights or faster tier progress.

When booking

  • Book direct: status benefits and points usually only apply when you book through the hotel or chain, not through booking sites.
  • Add your member number and politely ask about an upgrade before arrival.
  • Programmes with extras: credit card travel portals such as Fine Hotels + Resorts (American Express) sometimes add benefits like breakfast and hotel credit.
