When is a travel eSIM worth it?
Within the EU as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, EU contracts usually roam at home prices. Outside that area – for example in Switzerland, the UK, Turkey, the USA or Asia – many providers charge high roaming fees or only offer expensive day passes.
An eSIM for your destination is then often much cheaper: you buy a data plan for the country or region, install it on your iPhone and use it locally for mobile data. Your regular number stays active for calls and texts.
How to set up the eSIM
- Buy before you travel: choose country or region, data volume and validity.
- Install: via QR code or link – on iPhone under Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM. Ideally at home on Wi-Fi.
- Switch at your destination: under Settings → Mobile Service, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and turn on “Data Roaming” for it.
- Protect your main number: keep “Data Roaming” off for your home SIM so it doesn't incur charges.
What to watch out for
- Device: eSIM works from iPhone XS/XR; your iPhone must be carrier-unlocked.
- Data volume: maps, messaging and email need little; video, hotspot and photo uploads need a lot.
- Validity: depending on the provider it starts at installation or only at the first connection in the destination – check before buying.
- Data only: travel eSIMs usually have no phone number of their own. WhatsApp and iMessage keep working with your number.
