Renting a car on holiday: what to check when booking

Insurance, deposit, fuel policy and handover – how to avoid expensive surprises at the counter.

Before you book

  • Fully comprehensive cover without excess: many cheap offers come with a high excess. At the counter you're then sold expensive extra cover – better book it upfront or check whether your credit card covers the excess.
  • Credit card for the deposit: most companies block a deposit on a real credit card in the driver's name. Debit cards are often not accepted.
  • Full-to-full fuel policy: you pick up the car with a full tank and return it full. With “full-to-empty” you usually prepay the first tank at a high price.
  • Mileage, drivers, borders: check mileage limits, fees for additional and young drivers and whether you may drive to neighbouring countries.
  • Driving licence: outside the EU some countries also require an international driving permit – apply in good time.

At pick-up

  • Photograph or film the car all round – including wheels, windscreen and interior, plus fuel gauge and mileage.
  • Have damage recorded before you drive off, even small scratches.
  • Check extras: you don't need to buy again what you've already booked.

At return

  • Refuel nearby and keep the receipt.
  • Return during opening hours and have the condition confirmed. If you return out of hours, take photos again.
  • Watch your deposit: releasing the block on your credit card can take a few days.
How Voynera helps

Rental cars from your confirmations appear in Voynera with pick-up and return times in your plan. Your credit card's rental status benefits are under Benefits – and if a rental car is booked, Voynera doesn't suggest a transfer.
