Why an eSIM?
Japan isn't part of EU roaming rules, and mobile data on a European plan can get really expensive there. With an eSIM you use a Japanese network at a fixed price – ideal for maps, translation apps and timetables.
- Excellent coverage: in cities, on trains and even in many subway tunnels reception is very good.
- On the move a lot: if you're crossing the country by Shinkansen and navigating a lot, go for a bit more data.
How to set it up
- Buy before you leave and install it via QR code or app – ideally on your home Wi-Fi.
- Activate on arrival: with many providers the plan starts with your first connection in the country.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM, off for your normal SIM – your number stays reachable for calls and texts without data charges.
- Check your phone: it must support eSIM and must not be carrier-locked.
Good to know
- Suica on your iPhone: pay for trains, subways and konbini with Suica in Apple Wallet – more in our public transport guide.
- Entry: many nationalities currently need no visa for short tourist stays. Japan is planning an online travel authorisation (JESTA) – check the latest rules before you go.
- Sockets: Japan uses type A at 100 volts – you'll need an adapter; Apple chargers handle the voltage.
