Why an eSIM?
Turkey isn't part of EU roaming rules. Without a travel add-on, costs add up quickly. An eSIM with a fixed data allowance is the easy option for a holiday or a city break in Istanbul.
- Istanbul and the coast: coverage is good in cities and resorts.
- Paying for transport: in Istanbul you need an Istanbulkart for public transport – apps help you find top-up points and lines.
How to set it up
- Buy before you leave and install it via QR code or app – ideally on your home Wi-Fi.
- Activate on arrival: with many providers the plan starts with your first connection in the country.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM, off for your normal SIM – your number stays reachable for calls and texts without data charges.
- Check your phone: it must support eSIM and must not be carrier-locked.
Good to know
- Local SIM cards: phones with a Turkish SIM have to be registered for longer stays. With a travel eSIM this usually doesn't affect you as a tourist.
- Sockets: Turkey uses type C and F plugs, like most of continental Europe.
- Entry: check your country's travel advice for visa rules before you go.
