Why an eSIM?
The USA isn't part of EU roaming rules. Without a travel add-on, mobile data on a European plan can be very expensive. With an eSIM you use a US network at a fixed price.
- Huge country: look for plans that use the major US networks – in national parks and rural areas coverage is still often patchy.
- Navigation and rental cars: if you use maps and streaming a lot, you'll need more data than you think.
How to set it up
- Buy before you leave and install it via QR code or app – ideally on your home Wi-Fi.
- Activate on arrival: with many providers the plan starts with your first connection in the country.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM, off for your normal SIM – your number stays reachable for calls and texts without data charges.
- Check your phone: it must support eSIM and must not be carrier-locked.
Good to know
- Phone number: most travel eSIMs are data-only. Calls go via WhatsApp, FaceTime or your normal number.
- Entry: you need an ESTA before travelling to the US – see our guide to travel authorisations.
- Sockets: the US uses type A/B plugs.
