Why an eSIM?
Since Brexit, the UK is no longer part of EU roaming rules. Some EU plans still include it, but many charge it as non-EU – check your plan before you travel. An eSIM is the safe and often cheap option.
- Short trips: for a weekend in London, small plans are usually enough.
- Contactless everywhere: in London you pay for the Tube and buses directly with your card or phone – no data needed for that, but you'll want it for maps and departure times.
How to set it up
- Buy before you leave and install it via QR code or app – ideally on your home Wi-Fi.
- Activate on arrival: with many providers the plan starts with your first connection in the country.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM, off for your normal SIM – your number stays reachable for calls and texts without data charges.
- Check your phone: it must support eSIM and must not be carrier-locked.
Good to know
- Entry: you need an ETA for the UK – see our guide to travel authorisations.
- Sockets: the UK uses type G plugs.
- Ireland is EU: EU roaming applies in the Republic of Ireland, but not in Northern Ireland.
