Why an eSIM?
Canada isn't part of EU roaming rules, and data roaming can be very expensive there. With an eSIM you use a Canadian network at a fixed price – for cities like Vancouver, Toronto and Montréal as well as road trips.
- Huge country: coverage is good in cities and along main roads, often not in national parks and the north – download offline maps beforehand.
- Road trip: navigation and music streaming in the rental car use more data than you'd think.
How to set it up
- Buy before you leave and install it via QR code or app – ideally on your home Wi-Fi.
- Activate on arrival: with many providers the plan starts with your first connection in the country.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM, off for your normal SIM – your number stays reachable for calls and texts without data charges.
- Check your phone: it must support eSIM and must not be carrier-locked.
Good to know
- Entry: if you fly to Canada you need an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) beforehand – apply only on the Canadian government's official website.
- Sockets: Canada uses type A/B – you'll need an adapter.
- Rental car: tips on status and insurance are in our car rental guide.
