Why an eSIM?
Switzerland isn't in the EU – EU roaming doesn't automatically apply. Many EU plans charge Switzerland as expensive non-EU roaming, especially budget plans. Check before you travel whether your plan includes Switzerland – otherwise an eSIM is worth it.
- Border regions: even on the other side of the border your phone may connect to a Swiss network – keep an eye on data roaming near the border.
- Mountains: coverage in valleys and on hiking trails is usually good, but not everywhere on mountain tours.
How to set it up
- Buy before you leave and install it via QR code or app – ideally on your home Wi-Fi.
- Activate on arrival: with many providers the plan starts with your first connection in the country.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM, off for your normal SIM – your number stays reachable for calls and texts without data charges.
- Check your phone: it must support eSIM and must not be carrier-locked.
Good to know
- Sockets: Switzerland has its own sockets (type J). Slim Europlugs fit, thick Schuko plugs don't – pack an adapter.
- Paying: Switzerland uses the franc; cards are accepted almost everywhere.
- Motorway sticker: you need a vignette for motorways, now also available as an e-vignette.
