If you travel a lot, you know it: the queue at the rental desk is longer than the one at the baggage belt. Status gets you through faster – and often into a better car. With the American Express Platinum Card you get high status at Hertz, SIXT and Avis without the usual number of rentals. Important: you have to enrol once for each through your Amex account.

The details below are from American Express Germany; benefits can differ for cards issued in other countries.

SIXT: SIXT ONE Platinum

  • Upgrade to the next category, subject to availability
  • Up to 15% off SIXT rent a car and SIXT van & truck
  • Skip the Counter at selected branches
  • Plus: €200 SIXT ride credit a year for chauffeured transfers

Note from American Express: if you already use SIXT status and SIXT ride, you need to enrol once again through the Amex Experience app by 31 December 2026.

Hertz: Gold Plus Rewards Five Star

  • Priority service at more than 1,000 locations worldwide
  • Upgrade to the next category, subject to availability
  • 25% bonus on Hertz points for qualifying rentals
  • Up to 15% off standard rates, more on the Prestige Collection in some countries
  • Free additional driver (spouse or partner) and, in some countries, up to 4 hours' grace on return

Avis: President's Club

  • 10 to 25% off rentals
  • Priority service at the counter
  • Guaranteed one-class upgrade at airport and railway locations, two at weekends subject to availability
  • Free additional driver
  • How to book: via avisworld.com/amex or the Avis app – enter the code “Platinum” when enrolling

Insurance included – with conditions

If you pay the rental with the Platinum Card and you're travelling, American Express includes collision damage cover (up to €75,000) and liability cover (up to €750,000, US$1 million in the USA). “Travelling” means renting abroad – or at home if you've booked a flight or a hotel night with it. Read the policy terms before renting, especially exclusions and vehicle classes.

Tips at your destination

  • Photos and video at pick-up: film all round, including wheels, windscreen and fuel gauge – and have any damage added to the form.
  • Deposit: companies usually block an amount on a credit card in the main driver's name. Debit cards are often not accepted.
  • Extra insurance at the desk: check what your card already covers – then you can decline politely but firmly.
  • Full-to-full fuel: fill up near the return station and keep the receipt.
  • Tolls and vignettes: Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and Czechia require a vignette, and many French cities an emissions sticker (Crit'Air). Cars rented in the country usually have one – ask.
  • Borders and ferries: if you want to drive to a neighbouring country or an island, get approval first – otherwise the insurance may not apply.
  • Driving on the left: in the UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus an automatic makes life easier.
  • Driving licence: many countries outside the EU also require an International Driving Permit – Japan always does.
