Right away
- Stay calm and check: the airline's app and emails often show rebookings faster than the queue at the desk.
- Call at the same time: while you're queuing, call the airline's hotline.
- Connection at risk? Tell staff at the gate or desk immediately – on a single booking the airline must get you to your destination.
What you're entitled to (EU Regulation 261)
The rules apply to flights departing from the EU and to flights into the EU on an EU airline.
- Care: from a 2-hour delay (up to 1,500 km), 3 hours (1,500 to 3,500 km and all longer flights within the EU) or 4 hours (all others) you're entitled to reasonable meals and refreshments and two phone calls or emails.
- Hotel: if you can only continue the next day, the airline must cover the hotel and transfer.
- From 5 hours: you can give up the flight and get the ticket price refunded.
- Cancellation: you choose between a refund and re-routing at the earliest opportunity.
- Compensation: depending on the route you may also be entitled to compensation – details in our guide to passenger rights.
Collect evidence
- Photos: departure board showing the delay, boarding pass, notices at the gate.
- Receipts: for food, taxi and hotel if the airline doesn't hand out vouchers.
- Note the reason: what reason did the airline give? This matters for compensation later.
