Package holidays: book through a travel agent or online?

Personal advice or full control – the pros and cons at a glance, and why in the end it comes down to the kind of traveller you are.

Flight, hotel and transfer from one source: a package holiday takes a lot of planning off your hands. The question is where to book it – at a travel agency, by phone or online yourself. There's no single right answer. But it helps to know the differences.

What makes a package holiday

  • One contract partner: the tour operator is responsible for the whole trip – even if the hotel or the transfer isn't right.
  • Insolvency protection: your money is protected if the operator goes bust. Look for the protection certificate in your documents.
  • Defects = price reduction: if something isn't as booked, report it on site and you can claim part of the price back.
  • Cancel free of charge: in unavoidable, extraordinary circumstances at the destination that significantly affect the trip.

This is how it works under German and EU package travel law. If you book flight and hotel separately, you don't get these rights in full – for flights, air passenger rights apply.

Travel agency or phone travel service

ProsCons
Personal advice, often from someone who knows the destinationOpening hours instead of 24/7
One fixed contact – even if something goes wrong on the tripNot every provider and hotel is on offer
Saves time searching and comparingSometimes service fees
Access to special rates and allocationsYou give up some control

Booking online yourself

ProsCons
Huge choice, everything comparable at any timeLots of time spent searching, filtering and comparing
Other travellers' reviews at a glanceOften only a hotline or chat when things go wrong
Book whenever and wherever you likeYou have to check the small print and extra costs yourself
Frequent early-bird and last-minute dealsYou only notice on the trip if something isn't right

My way: the American Express travel service

For bigger trips I prefer the phone travel service that comes with the American Express Platinum Card. For me it's more personal, prices are sometimes better than online, and I have a fixed contact who knows my trip. If something changes, I call – instead of clicking through forms. It's simply less stressful.

For hotels I look for properties in Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts – then breakfast, an upgrade and late check-out are already included.

Verdict: it depends on you

If you like to research, compare and make every decision yourself, booking online suits you. If you want to save time and have someone to call when there's a problem, you'll feel more at home with a travel agent or by phone. Both are right – it depends on what matters more to you: control or peace of mind.
