City breaks: make more of a few days away

With hand luggage, a smart journey and good planning you have more time at your destination for what you came for.

Planning

  • Go early, come back late: a Friday-morning flight and a Sunday-evening return turn two nights into almost three full days.
  • Stay central: a few euros more for a good location save you travel time every day.
  • Two or three highlights, not a list: book major sights with time slots in advance – it saves queuing.
  • Check closing days: many museums close on a fixed day, often Monday.

Getting there and luggage

  • Hand luggage only: saves time at the baggage belt and often money. Check your airline's size limits – see our carry-on guide.
  • From the airport into town: check beforehand whether train, bus or a pre-booked transfer suits you best – especially when arriving late.
  • Parking at the departure airport: for a weekend, pre-booked parking is often cheaper than train and taxi combined.

At your destination

  • Pay contactless: in many cities you can pay for buses and trains directly with your card or phone.
  • Leave your bags: if your room isn't ready, hotels usually look after your luggage.
  • Internet: within the EU you use your normal plan. Outside (for example London, Istanbul, Switzerland) an eSIM is worth it.
